It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing

How Many Are You?

Happy Birthday, Jack!

This week Jack celebrated his 4th birthday.  It was a low-key, enjoyable day.  We let him open his presents in the morning, then took him to his favorite playplace, Carl’s Jr, for lunch.  Tim was working from home and was able to come along, so it was a special treat to have Daddy with us.  In the evening Jack iChatted with his cousins and grandparents, and licked all the frosting off his cupcake after blowing out the candles.  This year he did NOT blow them out with his nose.  We are just amazed at how much growth has taken place in 4 years.  We once held a little bundle wrapped in a blanket - someone who couldn’t walk or talk - and now we have a rambunctious little boy who chatters up a storm, is potty trained, can dress and feed himself, and who continues to challenge and delight us every day.  We love you, buddy!

I decorated his door the night before and he woke up to find this on his birthday.  When he saw it Jack whispered to himself, “Oh my gosh.  This is great.”

Tim decided to get him a Leapster, and it has been a huge hit.  It’s been all he wants to play with the past couple of days.

Jack takes a break from the Leapster to play with his new Lincoln Logs from Uncle Brian, Aunt Laura and cousins Katy, Emily and Ali.  The pack is a Western theme and came with a couple horses and cowboys.  They had normal names like Cowboy Ed and Cowboy Bill, and the horses were named Freedom and Rocket.  However, Jack decided he wanted to give them new names and threw out whatever nonsensical syllable combinations popped into his head.  I think we now have Cowboy Broo-Boo and the poor horse is something like Shrivnah.

Tom’s Farms

Today we took a little trip to Tom’s Farms to visit our good friend Melissa with her two children, Noah and Olivia, as well as her Dad and stepmom.  The weather and company were lovely, and we enjoyed a nice afternoon outside.

There were a lot of these life-sized animals that the kids enjoyed looking at.

Hugs

Tonight, Jack gave me a hug and went upstairs to go to bed.  About 20 minutes later he came back down to get his tiger and I asked for another hug.

He informed me that I had received one already and proceeded to take off but I asked if I could please have one and he said “I guess you can have a small one”.  When he finally left the room he turned around and said “Tomorrow when I wake up, you can have another one”.

Jack and the deodorant

Today Kari taught Jack about my deodorant.

After we put Jack to bed we were elsewhere in the house doing other things.  When we came back to our room at 10PM, we found a nice aroma accompanying the munchkin who had decided to sneak down to Mom and Dad’s room.  We followed him back to his room, found the deodorant there, and the smell was so strong that we had to ask if he had put it all over.  He thought about it for a bit and said “I put it all over to make me smell nice and good”, at which point he should have been punished but I couldn’t help but start snickering instead.

So yesterday I used my new iPod for the first time.  Its only been, what?  Four months since I got it at Christmas?  Nevermind.  It’s up and running now, and I am so happy with it.  I took it to the gym and started to groove away my workout.  I had it on shuffle, with about 700 songs for it to choose from.  After the first song, I am startled to hear my Dad’s voice.  “Huh?  What’s going on?” I think.  I listen a little more and discover he’s introducing a song from his group, Six4Him.  Their cd was made at a live concert.  So I hear the funny intro that my Dad gives to “Singin’ With the Saints” - he tells a couple funny stories about my Grandpa (his Dad) who has been gone for awhile - and then their great upbeat song starts.  I was so tickled by the whole thing.  I could not help but smile and chuckle through it.  I’m sure the other gym-goers thought I was nuts.  So thanks, Dad.  You made my day!

A pleasant Easter weekend

“He has risen!  He has risen indeed!”

Our pastor actually did this traditional declaration/response in our very contemporary church this weekend.  I loved it!
Anyway, we had a good weekend.  Most of our Easter celebration fell on Saturday.  The kids went to their grandparents house to color Easter eggs and do the traditional hunt with their cousins.

Jack proudly displays his masterpiece.

We went to Saturday night Easter service, and then had a lazy Sunday.  Both kids slept in until (gasp!) 8:30.  Abby actually didn’t make any Easter peep until close to 10:00.  After breakfast (although technically I think it should be considered brunch) the kids opened up presents from us and Grandma Karen and Papa Tom.  Then Tim hung up a swing on the back porch and the kids took turns enjoying that.  We capped the evening with some popcorn and an iChat with my parents.  Jack was a wiggle worm - he gets so hyped up seeing himself on the computer!  But Abby sat still with the help of a big bowl of popcorn.

Earlier this week Abby helped me with the chores.  She also loves to unload all the silverware from the dishwasher.  This is particularly helpful when they’re clean.
